Our mission is to provide comprehensive, collaborative, client-centred allied health services to people in Central Australia and surrounds. We are committed to increasing access to allied health services for people living in rural, remote and very remote locations. Our ultimate aim is to reduce the health inequalities associated with geographical isolation and limited access to appropriate supports. We are striving to provide a wholistic service that maximises people’s mobility and function for living in Central Australia.

Our Services

Who we work witH

Bush Steps works with clients to maximise their mobility and function. We focus in seeing clients living with limb difference, Neurological or Muscular Conditions. We also work with a wide range of clients that fall outside of this scope. Contact us to discuss this further.

Limb Difference

Limb difference is the partial or complete absence of, or malformation of, limbs (arms and legs). The Central Australian region has the highest prevalence of amputation in Australia.

Bush Steps provides prosthetic service provision and physical rehabilitation to all presentations of limb loss.

Neuromuscular

A Neuromuscular condition affects the muscles, or the nervous system, or both. Common presentations include Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

Bush Steps provides orthotic service provision and physical rehabilitation to all neuromuscular presentations.

Where we WorK

Bush Steps works in Central Australia and surrounding regions. We provide access to Allied Health services through our Clinic in Alice Springs, our mobile service in the local community and outreach services across Central Australia and surrounds.

Alice Springs Clinic

Our clinic in Alice Springs is set looking out on a section of the East MacDonnell Ranges. Our clinic space has a purpose built gym, private rooms, reception and waiting areas. Within the grounds of our clinic we have an outdoor mobility garden and exercise area which allows for both high and low mobility. This space provides clients with the opportunity to train for real life and living out Bush in Central Australia, which we believe is often not achieved solely working in a gym.

Alice Springs Community

We can also see people in their homes, or an alternative location.

We have all the resources to travel to see our clients, including a purpose built prosthetics and orthotics mobile workshop.

Remote Community

Our services can be mobile and we travel throughout Central Australia and surrounds to see our clients, including regular clinics in Tennant Creek and outreach to communities including Ntaria (Hermmansburg), Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa), Ampilatwatja, Utopia and Milyirrtjarra (Warburton).

We are able to travel to see clients as needed, please contact us to discuss this further.

Our team

Joel Williams

Director, Prosthetist and Orthotist

MCPO, MAOPA

Joel is a clinician and director at Bush Steps. He graduated from La Trobe University with a Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics in 2018 and began his career at Orthotic Prosthetic Solutions in Perth, WA. During his employment at Orthotic Prosthetic Solutions Joel practised in both prosthetics and orthotics, developing a keen interest in acute prosthetic management and complex neuromuscular orthotic presentations.

In 2022 Joel moved to Alice Springs to re-establish the prosthetics and orthotics service at Alice Springs Hospital. After a year of servicing the prosthetic and orthotic needs of Central Australia through Alice Springs Hospital it became evident that service provision was significantly limited by the requirement of patient travel.

Joel’s goal is to increase the accessibility of essential allied health services within Central Australia and surrounds.
